Sasha Siem is a composer, writer and interdisciplinary artist whose work explores sound, voice, resonance and the ways music can illuminate human experience. Her music has been commissioned and performed internationally by the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Aldeburgh Festival, Rambert, Opera North, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne in Montreal and the International Contemporary Ensemble in New York.
She has also released 6 alt-pop albums including Most of the Boys, premiered at the Royal Opera House; Bird Burning; wHOLeY, premiered at Sadler’s Wells; L.OVER; EAR.th, integrating voice with NASA recordings of the Earth from space; and True, for voice and prepared piano.
Educated at the University of Cambridge and Harvard University, her current research explores music and the maternal, asking how sound, listening and rhythm shape the mother–child bond and make audible the often unheard dimensions of domestic life. Bringing life writing into dialogue with ethnography, developmental science and compositional thinking, the project considers motherhood as a form of living music and forms part of a broader inquiry into what sound can reveal about love, mortality, memory and the thresholds of human life.
