Carla Freeman is the Goodrich C. White Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Emory University. A cultural anthropologist and ethnographer of the Caribbean, her research has examined the entanglements of culture, gender, and political economy, and the expanding role of emotion in contemporary capitalism. Her books include High Tech and High Heels in the Global Economy (Duke University Press), Entrepreneurial Selves (Duke University Press), and Global Middle Classes (with Rachel Heiman and Mark Liechty, SAR Press). She is the past President of the Association for Feminist Anthropology and the editor (with Li Zhang, UC-Davis) of Oxford University Press’ series of contemporary ethnography, "Issues of Globalization.” Since 2014 she has served as the Director of the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry, Dean of Faculty, and Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory. As a visiting scholar at the OCLW (2026-2027) she will be working on an intimate ethnographic biography of Caribbean feminist, Peggy Antrobus, an activist-scholar and leader of the global women’s movement.
